Events
The bowls season starts in late April and finishes in mid September but you would be welcome to start with us at any time during the season.
Open Days
Twice a year we advertise an Open Day, in April and May, when members of the community are invited along to meet the membership and try their hand at bowls. One of members is a qualified County Coach and is likely to be on hand to give instruction and guidance. All necessary equipment will be provided. The only requirement that we have of you is that you wear flat or flattish soled shoes.
Club Matches
As you will be able to see from our Fixture List the bulk of our activity is playing “friendly” matches against other clubs in the area. The matches are made up of either 4 teams of 3 or 3 team of 4, the latter being the most prevalent. Most games are fairly local with the occasional trip into Kent. This gives you the opportunity to meet and greet other like-minded bowlers. The midweek matches are played on either a Wednesday or Thursday, starting usually at 6.15pm. Both Saturdays and Sundays are taken up with matches which normally start at 2.30pm.
Alf Sayers Memorial Trophy
This is an all day triples competition, which takes place in July, when local clubs are invited to enter a team for which they pay an entry fee. On this day it is always hoped club members will be on hand to help in the smooth running of the day as it is a very important event that raises much needed funds for our coffers. It is a very enjoyable day. Most other clubs have similar days.
Alf Sayers was a former member who was held in high regard and this Trophy is in his memory.
Internal Competitions
As the title suggests this is a competition amongst ourselves. You have a choice of playing for the Novices Cup, which can only enter once, Men’s Singles, Ladies Singles, Mixed Singles, Pairs, Triples and 2 Wood Yardstick. You may enter as many or as few as you like.
All of the finals are played on “Finals Day” which is usually on the last Sunday of August but this may vary from year to year.
The competitions are played on “knockout” basis and and all teams are “drawn”.
External Competitions
Once again the title should be self-explanatory. There are numerous competitions that available for you to enter as an individual, with friends in your own right or as representative of your club. These can be at various levels working your way through local level, county and national levels. Once again you be involved in as much as little as you like.
Other events
During the year there are various events are organised to entertain you and to have some fun as well as raising funds to keep the club solvent. These include barbecue, quiz night and an all day invitation Triples Competition where we host visiting teams. After the close of the season there is an annual dinner and presentation evening. Newsletters are circulated as and when necessary to keep you informed.
